Keep them coming !&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This blog has given me the opportunity to get connected with a lot of people I knew earlier...so thanks for that, &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/"&gt;blogger&lt;/a&gt;!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A reader asked me if I had any advice on job changing in the early parts of your career...so here goes:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Your career is your responsibility. Never lose sight of that reality!&lt;br /&gt;2. Changing jobs frequently will raise questions about your abilities to survive in high paced competitve organizations (which describes most good organizations!)&lt;br /&gt;3. However, surviving for lots of years in a large organization without any major achievements put bigger question marks for further growth.&lt;br /&gt;4. I always feel that HR people should get cross functional experience as well as cross-industry experience. Been in training for 2 years? Maybe you should try for recruitment or business HR or C&amp;B! Been in ITES for 4 years...maybe you should experience IT services or FMCG organizatons.&lt;br /&gt;5. For point number 4 to materialise without you changing a job is not possible...but the best way forward is to stick to a large organization where you can build these diverse skills at least. Joining a 2 person HR group in a 80 people organization might give you a lot of responsibility but I would always say that your expertise to "scale up" has never been shown, so joining any of the big boys in your mid career phase would become difficult.&lt;br /&gt;6. Different industries have different "respectable average tenures" in them. So from BPOs (1 year) to IT (2-3 years) to FMCG (3-5 years) to manufacturing (4-6 years) it really depends with which industry you start.&lt;br /&gt;7. But always remember point number 3. Tenure is just one of the factors. If you write something like "Looking for Manager Recruitment position in Hyderabad" it not only helps me but also tells me that you are a professional candidate who gets to the point.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lots of people use the format "HR Manager/10 years exp/IIM B/Hyderabad", that helps too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Make life a little easy for me. Why is that, you may ask? That's because they are never actively looking for a job, unless their is some major work/personal life crisis that makes them reassess their career/job goals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So how do people like me know whom to contact? Or, if you are a senior level candidate what should you be doing so that you are on my radar?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One interesting post I came across&lt;a href="http://www.blueskyresumes.com/weblog/archives/2005/05/inside_scoop.html"&gt; is this one at Bluesky resumes&lt;/a&gt;:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;em&gt;“Senior-level job seekers have to view themselves as ‘Me Inc.’ she says.&lt;br /&gt;“The best way to get noticed by retained recruiters who specialize in your field&lt;br /&gt;or industry is to become a visible presence. Build and actively maintain a&lt;br /&gt;strong network, join trade associations, offer to speak at industry events, make&lt;br /&gt;contacts with trade press and even write articles on your area of expertise.”&lt;br /&gt;Pinkman doesn’t discourage senior-level job seekers from submitting resumes, but&lt;br /&gt;she emphasizes the importance of ongoing personal brand development. “In the&lt;br /&gt;end,” she says, “if you’re visible and I need someone who matches your&lt;br /&gt;background, I’ll find you a lot faster.”&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And so will I. Are you on the HR egroups, offering sensible and practical knowledge that showcase your strategic thinking? Are you invited by NHRD, ISTD or XLRI to speak at their conferences? Some points to remember in sending resumes:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;Keep it in a standard word processing program like MS Word. Don't send me resumes in pdf formats or other obscure applications.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Don't add too many tables or unique bullet points. I might not have the same version of word to read your version!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Desist from adding your soft copy picture on your resume. I guess that would be helpful in certain kind of jobs, but they unnecessarily make the file huge.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Don't add colors, bigger fonts or colored fonts to make important points. You can keep specific points in &lt;strong&gt;bold&lt;/strong&gt; or &lt;u&gt;underline&lt;/u&gt; them.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Please, keep the resume at fit at least 2 pages. Your resume should be succinct enough to evoke my interest to call you. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Lists of bullet points about your job desciption do not tell me about what you did.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Embellish your resume with your achievements, not what the job description was.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;br /&gt;More later!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Want me to take a look at your resume? So, my focus is on meeting my client's needs.
